At East Coast Marine & Industrial Limited, our safety policy is to conduct work in a manner that protects the safety of our employees, customers, contractors and the public.
The Company aspires to prevent all accidents, injuries, and occupational illnesses through the active participation of every employee. We strongly believe that work performed safely yields the highest quality service. The fundamental elements of our Safety Management System (SMS) include;
- Commitment to a zero harm philosophy, where all incidents are seen as being preventable.
- Responsibility by all employees to stop or prevent any unsafe conditions or unsafe acts.
- Authority to immediately correct unsafe conditions and unsafe acts.
- Accountability for everyone’s safety, health and environmental performance.
Strong leadership is crucial to the development and implementation of a positive safety culture.
ECMI management recognize this, and are committed to taking an active role in the development and implementation of a comprehensive SMS.
Responsibility for the administration of the SMS is shared among management in accordance with the chain of command. Management are ultimately accountable for the delivery of specific OH&S initiatives by cooperating with the Occupational Health and Safety Committee, along with all other program elements under the direction of the HSEQ Manager.
Management will ensure that employees under their direction are (a) competent to do their job in accordance with safe operating procedures, and (b) knowledgeable of the hazards and risks associated with their jobs.
Employees who are in a position to manage work must (above all else) lead by example.
We strive to achieve levels of performance that meet or exceed legislative requirements. This requires active engagement and progressive improvement in competencies and performance by all employees in how we identify hazards and mitigate the risks associated with our work.
Employees are obligated to report all hazards immediately, and work to solve problems in the workplace.
All employees are accountable for their own personal safety and the safety of their co-workers.
As such, all employees and contractors are obligated to comply with applicable regulations, standards and ECMI safe work procedures.
ECMI has achieved a nationally accredited NLCSA (Newfoundland and Labrador Construction Safety Association) accredited COR (Certificate of Recognition) safety program to ensure that our safety standards meet national standards as a minimum.
